Public pools seem to be one of those amenities along with libraries that are currently suffering in nearly every developed nation at the moment. The UK public pool system is in shambles and the Dutch government cut school swimming lessons which now means that many poor children do not know how to swim (the country is crisscrossed by canals so this is a huge risk).
I visited a public pool in southern Paris regularly that was brilliant, but it feels like an anomaly these days.

Cities (and more importantly the people who vote at every local election) have seen pools as essentially tossing money into the fire as building and maintaining them is insanely expensive compared to splashpads & playgrounds.
