      I still don’t get why Democrats and so many people on r/neoliberal were so supportive of the Tiktok ban before Trump’s inauguration.

      It wasn’t about privacy, otherwise Democrats would’ve introduced a bill that regulated sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. as well. The national security angle is moot; Tiktok doesn’t promote pro-chinese content on their platform over other content, and anyone saying that is frankly a conspiracy theorist. There were also claims of antisemetism, but that’s a problem endemic on social media and not specific to Tiktok.

      I’ve also seen people claiming that Tiktok’s pro-Trump message is justification for it being banned, but honestly that’s just part of a broader trend of CEOs resorting to sycophancy to keep their industries alive.

      It’s extra weird when you realize that Tiktok is one of the platforms that are friendlier to Democrats than the likes of Facebook and Twitter, whose CEOs are or were actively collaborating with Republicans. The Democrats could’ve leveraged this relatively more left-wing platform to their advantage but nah, let’s show Tiktok users how hostile we are to them instead for some reason.
