The rise of Indian Solar manufacturing is a global success , as the country not only will likely become independent of Chinese imports, but could become a competitor to China in its own way, not necessarily due to cheaper prices, but simply cheap enough prices while not being China
There are 4-5 levels of solar manufacturing (first 2 are often together)
1. Extracting the silicon ( usually from sand) and purifying it to 99%
2. Melting the polysilicon into ingots
3. Cutting the ingots into slices called waffers( imagine ultra-thin salami slicing, basically)
4. Turning the wafers into small cells
5. Finally, assembling the cells into modules
India is first localizing the final stages , namely module manufacturing, where capacity recently hit 100GW per year, while importing cells from China
Step by step ,Indian companies start to make their own cells ,then their own wafers, and finally move to make the ingots and purify the polisilicon themselves
