If media outlets treated this like they treated the Minnesota lawmaker murders and school shooting that happened at the same time as Kirkgate, nobody would know about this and there wouldn’t be any of this fanfiction floating around.

Kirk’s death is awful and doesn’t help anyone.
I feel like such a dick when it comes to this stuff. But for fucksakes it’s not one the worst things in American history, not even near. Nor should there be some special day of remembrance. He wasn’t a government official enacting his sworn duties.
He was a guy doing his thing and he was murder for it. That’s bad.

Social media really makes us miss the historical perspective. Harvey Milk and MLK were assassinated. Student movement leaders such as Ralph Featherstone had bombs placed in their cars and others like Fred Hampton killed by hitmen. Several Presidents had attempts on their lives and some did die to attacks. Senators have been killed in the last 40 years. The only consistent pattern is guns. Nothing else. We do not live in unprecedented times.

I have an adult child who has recently transitioned to a woman. I mean the transition started less than a year ago. If I’m being honest it’s been a challenge as a parent to process this. However, for any parent who’s not a complete sociopath, your main desire is for your child to be happy.
I texted her today because I’ve been watching the response to CK’s death on the internet and cringing at all the people trying to make him out to be a good person and even a hero of sorts. I know that kind of response has to be really hard to hear for someone like my daughter who has been directly targeted by CK’s disgusting and hateful rhetoric. So, while I feel bad for CK’s children who lost their father yesterday, I’ve been more concerned for my daughter who may become more of a target because of this violence.
My daughter told me that she’s mainly hopeful that the shooter isn’t trans, because it’s just going to make life more difficult for her. That’s also something that I worry about. While the world is better off without CK, the shooter hasn’t made life any easier for the people who he’s targeted with his vile hatred.
