I used to work for a Senate Committee Chairman that oversaw USAID. I was a lowly intern, and even though I had cool research opportunities, just as often I was setting out water or whatever. But even just to put out placards and water for USAID hearings felt like a real honor to me.
I was so proud of the work that USAID did. It was so bipartisan and unambiguously good. A reminder that America could be a force for incredible good, despite its mistakes.
Another responsibility I had was answering phones, and a lot of Biafran people facing persecution would call every day and beg for US intervention. It was my job to say “I will pass that along” and hang up on them. It was terribly depressing, so the bright spot of USAID really lifted my spirits.
I worked in a Republican office where many devout Christians celebrated USAID as the triumph of our faith. I wonder where those people are now?
More than anything else Trump had done, this pointless spiteful evil has broken my spirit and robbed me of hope.
