The new winner is the former president [whose reelection](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Malawian_general_election) in 2019 was annulled by the Constitutional Court due to widespread fraud. I don’t know enough about Malawian politics to say for sure whether this is positive or negative for democracy, but I lean towards negative; from what I can tell the main motivating factor for voters here was economic (inflation in particular).
