TL;DR it’s similar stuff to what Goldin has previously written, arguing a cause of rapid fertility decline is caused by a mismatch between desires of men and women and rapid economic development. It also notes the importance of contraceptive programs in managing fertility, especially noticeable in nations such as Mexico and India which are not yet high income nations like those usually discussed in papers on the fertility crisis yet have also seen major drops in TFR.

The reason why the birth rate is declining is because the opportunity cost of having kids has increased drastically (as opposed to the popular but wrong theory about the cost of kids increasing).

Women in particular have much “better” alternatives for spending their time, in education, career, travel, hobbies, etc.
