One of those unfortunate but real examples of climate action and growth not being in alignment. Honestly was SAF ever particularly realistic as an alternative? I remember thinking it was rather dubious when I first heard of measures to implement it. Alternate technological solutions to reduce the creation of contrails are nice, they seem more a bandaid on a larger wound. The same goes for placing the burden of aviation emissions solely on frequent fliers and those who take private flight. At least within the EU, efforts to improve grounded modes of travel between population hubs sound like a good start but this obviously will not work for the many international flights that are the only means to go from country to country.
At the same time, it is unreasonable to entertain the degrowth ideas of those who want to dramatically cut down air travel. Especially in a time when the world is already so fragmented, the role airlines play in connecting us is of genuine value. Tough situation all around for sure.
