If you are going to talk about the debt in France, the conversation has to be centered on pensions, not misguided supply-side mandates. This may sound harsh but it was extremely obvious to me that the authors were based in the UK before looking them up given their emphasis on Britain’s role in keeping the EU liberal – a story that is only very tangentially related to France’s deficit spending

Why do people say “Macronism” when “Macron-economics” is sitting right here?!

I like the point about regulation but there’s something else I noted. The point about Macron just throwing money at problems (the post yellow jackets splurge, Covid recovery, the energy price freeze he got no credit for) reminds me of a recent interview of outgoing Court of Accounts president Pierre Moscovici on *Public Sénat* – he was quite harsh on the unfocused energy price subsidies, and said that since 2018 it has been “un problème un chèque” (everytime there’s a problem, write a check) instead of reform.
Of course we’re not getting that kind of analysis in French political media/discourse. It’s all about Macron supposedly giving away billions to companies – which he has… mostly for buying social peace through employment and energy subsidies, but no one will admit to that. They’ll blame him for not also doing price controls on *all* food and essential goods since 2022 (which is what the hard left has been screaming about). *Many* people dare say he’s been running an austerity regime since 2017.
