Probably a stupid question as a non-US member of this sub. Given the racial discrepancy in US voting, isn’t the VRA just legal gerrymandering for the Democrats. Like it seems absurd from a European perspective that your legally obligated to pack as many minorities into a certain district

Ultimately the future of our country is going to depend on whether the decisionmakers in the Democratic Party can be bothered to prioritize enacting their agenda at all (nonviolent) costs, or if they continue to believe their number one job is moderating conflict and upholding “norms” that at this point only exist in the minds of geriatric politicians, law professors, and columnists. If Biden had said after the student loan debt decision, “we respect the Supreme Court, but our interpretation of our emergency powers says we can do this, and I’m directing the Treasury Secretary to proceed with loan forgiveness”, would that have upset some people and broken some norms? Of course it would have, but it also might have swung the election and given him and Kamala something to point to with working people to say, “See, we do care about putting money in your pocket and making your lives better.” Even if it didn’t, it would have been the right thing to do.
As for redistricting, if Republicans want to continue choking off any possibility of a peaceful transfer of power at the federal level, blue states need to go full steam ahead with soft secession. There’s no good options unfortunately but living in a white Christian theocracy is the worst of them and not one I’m willing to abide by.
