The Other Reason Americans Don’t Use Mass Transit. People will take buses and trains only if they feel safe while riding them.

It’s kinda crazy how few people use my city’s busses when the majority of high schoolers take them (and have for 25+ years), they’re free, and almost always empty. The only thing missing from them is service after 7pm, and service on Sundays but I can understand why that’s not available when so few people use them (and they’re free).

Also huge com with mas transit is if you walk 2x the average walking speed like me, it’s frequently faster to walk than wait for a bus. If you’re planning a trip you can work around that but the return trip (especially if leaving after 8pm) means you’re walking or finding an alternative.

Anecdotally as someone from the bay area I’ve met a couple dozen people who moved to the the bay and wanted to not have a car and only use BART and public transit but stopped after being threatened or observing crimes take place on the train. It’s a massive problem in the SF Bay at least.
