According to what I think is the most recent IHME data, lead is still a leading cause of mortality and morbidity but the risk due to lead has been decreasing globally. It seems very much like a “if we just spent more money on this issue, we could make it go away” type of global health problem. Maybe not entirely as industrial lead is pretty ingrained in economies.
I checked their data, and they estimate that in 2023, 2.87% of deaths in North America had lead exposure as a risk factor, while in Central Asia it was 9.67% (only higher global regions were N Africa and Middle East). Note IHME data is based on, in my understanding, whatever data they can scrounge up and stuff into statistical models. I think it’s pretty interesting to get these global overviews, but stories like this one out of Kg are of course more valuable. Just got curious and wanted to look up some comparisons for myself.
