Anti immigration sentiment is driven by perceptions on crime more than on economics according to this poll. One concern I have with this poll is they should have asked immigration impacts on jobs/wages. Anti immigration activists main argument against immigration is economic like perceived job completion and wage suppression. The general public might view what is beneficial for the economy as what is beneficial for business, even if they hold anti immigration activists viewpoint on jobs and wages. Polls from 2012 showed that the public trusted Romney on the economy while Obama on Jobs.

Nearly every study you can find on the matter shows that in the United States, immigrants actually commit fewer crimes per capita than native born citizens.
Really great that the aspect people are the most scared of is the one most far removed from reality. Gotta love this electorate.
