  1. Who needs enemies when you have ‘friends’ like this?

With how the U.S. has been acting toward CanadaC, it should come as a shock to no one that 46% of Canadians now consider the U.S. to be an enemy—that’s 12% higher than China according to a recent [Angus Reid poll.](https://angusreid.org/carney-asia-trade-apec-asean-korea-malaysia-singapore/)

The United States is our neighbour, we should no longer be treating them as a friend. We made a bet that increasing economic integration in the U.S. would help secure our prosperity given the reliability of the U.S. as a trading partner and now that’s completely gone as the Trump administration is hell bent on ravaging Canada’s economy to annex and subjugate us.

I truly hope Carney is able to secure more free trade deals with other countries as our future needs to run through diversifying our trading partners.

The great irony in all of this is that even if there is a President that walks back all of this nonsense, I still think it’s revealed what the U.S. can recede to at its worst, and it’s going to make the Canadian public far more skeptical about things like free movement across the U.S. / Canada border. Canadian sovereignty has been such a latent issue up until Trump started mouthing off about wanting to make us the 51st state and how the border was fake.

I don’t think I’ll ever trust the U.S. again the way I did in the early-to-mid 2010s unless they’re willing to go about a program of active Detrumpification which I don’t trust will actually happen to halt the democratic backsliding currently unfolding in the U.S.

  2. It’s almost like he’s trying to get Canadians to hate the US. Yes, Trump is doing most of the work, but you would think as ambassador to the largest trading partner of the US, you would be trying to cool tensions in spite of Trump, rather than pouring oil into the fire…

(But I guess being an ***hole in public scores you brownie points with the disaster-in-chief, and we all know that is the only thing that matters in this administration).
