Japan will consider introducing nuclear submarines without excluding any options: Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara

In an interview with the Yomiuri Shimbun and other media outlets on the 31st, Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara was asked about the possibility of introducing nuclear submarines as part of strengthening defense capabilities. He said, “We will not rule out any options, and will consider measures necessary to improve our deterrence and response capabilities.”

Kihara also mentioned issues regarding the introduction of a Basic Act on Atomic Energy that stipulates the peaceful use of nuclear energy, saying, “Nothing has been decided at this point.” The coalition government agreement between the Liberal Democratic Party and the Japan Restoration Party clearly states a policy of aiming to possess submarines that utilize “next-generation power sources,” with nuclear submarines in mind.
