The TL;DR is that by saying the Republican senators can end the shutdown via ending the filibuster, he has inadvertently made it clear to the public and to his followers that it’s actually not the Democrats holding the government hostage.

Lol, if he really gets rid of the filibuster, then it will be great for Democrats come midterms assuming they meet predictions of capturing the House but not quite taking 60 seats in the Senate.
Maybe it takes ~~Nixon to go to China~~ Trump to get rid of the filibuster – because he’s a mean enough bully to get the GOP to comply rather to think of long-term prospects.
*(and yes, assuming no funny business from Trump, but I don’t think it’s really possible for him to rig the election – at least not based on things that the GOP has done so far)*
