The UK seems to be in quite a interesting situation where they are expounding a massive amount of resources and political will to manage unskilled immigrants, but highly skilled immigrants who genuinely want to integrate are basically left to fend for themselves like you see here. I can’t imagine the kind of humiliation one might might feel if you’re a banker or civil servant reduced to chef, especially when Hong Kong is more developed than London in terms of modernity. It’s not just immigrants even, I’ve heard that even British expats who spent their careers overseas as directing managers are reduced to bus drivers.
Although if there is a common pattern here, these are highly experienced managerial/director roles, whereas perhaps the what the UK is looking for is more for specialised R&D or wage-labor roles.
