By an estimate of the WSJ, more than 1,000 women have been recruited across Africa to work in the Alabuga weapons’ factory, a crucial element in the Russian war effort against Ukraine.
Lured to Russia with promises of professional training, scholarships or attractive salaries, these women were subjected to sequestration, workplace abuses, passport confiscations, wage theft, and were often provided with little to no safety equipment to handle the dangerous chemicals involved in the fabrication process.
One of these women, Adau, from South Sudan, was interviewed by the BBC, and delivered a scathing indictment of Russia’s recruitment methods: she was promised training in robotics, but ended up working in the assembly line of Shahed drones destined to strike Ukraine, and suffered from chemical burns during her stay in Tatarstan.
Adau realized she had been tricked into participating in the Russian war effort when the plant she was working in was struck by Ukrainian drones in April. She managed to return to South Sudan, but says many other women were not able to afford the ticket back home due to wage theft and remained stuck in Russia.
