  1. Taiwan is watching anxiously as it finds itself at the centre of a verbal clash between Beijing and Tokyo, fuelling fears that Taipei could be drawn into a major international conflict.

Though the island’s government has openly embraced Tokyo’s stance and condemned Beijing’s response as “hegemonic”, critics and political analysts have cautioned that Taiwan is now at risk of becoming a flashpoint in a confrontation between two major world powers.

  2. I’m not sure what Takaichi is doing here. Yes, China should have never threatened to behead her. But, she is also escalating the tension. Not sure whether that would help Taiwan. It might boost her popularity in Japan but it might undermine Taiwan’s position.

  3. >critics and political analysts have cautioned that Taiwan is *now* at risk of becoming a flashpoint in a confrontation between two major world powers.

Emphasis mine. Aggression against Taiwan would be the point of contention between China and Japan, which is the same reality now as before any remarks were made. Taiwan is not going to be caught in a crossfire, they are the intended target.
