In a vacuum this sounds dumb but I think this is a smart way to escalate things while also keeping options open. The main thing this establishes, if it were to be carried out, is a new boundary on what’s “permissible”. It would establish the precedent of American military aircraft flying *directly* over the capital of Venezuela, and puts pressure on Maduro because at any point one of these planes could be carrying a JDAM with his name on it instead of a bunch of slips of paper.
Does he take these sorties seriously and lower his terms for a way out, or abandons the capital? Does he carry on like normal and accept the risk that there’s F-35s over his head all the time?
And if the Trump admin does not decide to go through with regime change, they can just act like nothing happened and withdraw without consequence. Thing is the Trump admin doesn’t know what it wants while knowing they gotta do stuff so this isn’t a bad idea in the meanwhile lol
