>By tradition, the host country hands over a symbolic wooden gavel to the nation taking over the G20 presidency. But there was no American official on hand to receive it from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa because of the boycott.
>The U.S. wanted to send a representative from its embassy. South Africa refused, saying it was an insult for Ramaphosa to hand over to what it called a junior official.
Everyone’s being stupid

Donald Trump declared on Wednesday that the United States will exclude South Africa from next year’s G20 meeting in Miami, confirming earlier speculations from US and South African media.
The G20 is an intergovernmental forum that gathers representatives from the world’s largest economic powers – comprising 85% of the Gross World Product – to promote cooperation on key financial and environmental issues.
The 2025 summit concluded this weekend in Johannesburg and was boycotted by the United States, whose government actively promoted the far-right “White Genocide” conspiracy theory that alleges that White South Africans are being deliberately targeted by racist killings en masse, with indifference or complicity from the South African government – without credible evidence.
On May 21, 2025, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was “ambushed” during a bilateral meeting with Donald Trump in the Oval Office, where he was aggressively confronted on camera by the US President about the alleged targeted killings of white farmers. The episode caused uproar in South Africa, where Ramaphosa’s composure and level-headedness was broadly commended.
The United States has reiterated that South Africa, the only African nation to be a member of the G20, was “unworthy” of being invited to the summit, and has extended an invitation to Poland’s nationalist president Karol Nawrocki to attend as their guest on December 2026 in Miami.

So petty.
