There’s a Catch-22 with these groups where they try to compensate for their lack of domestic legitimacy by seeking it from abroad (and also funding, which is what they really want), but then struggle to get it, while at the cost of setting themselves up as propagandists for a foreign government which works at cross-purposes with their attempt to build legitimacy at home. Someone else has to carry the can for the water to get drawn.
Also a thing that happens with far left groups but usually the ones that try that end up with some syncretic red-brown ideology anyways especially if they’re looking towards Russia.
