I wouldn’t be so giddy if I were you. For all that hate he brings out in western Canada, Guilbeault is generally well liked in Québec liberal circles. He’s probably the highest profile federal minister there and regularly goes on news panels defending the government’s record. I don’t know who else can do that job. Joly perhaps, but she doesn’t seem all that happy with Carney either. Carney would be in a far worse position today if full on separatist BQ voters didn’t lend their votes this time because of the Trump threat. And the polls show the BQ is back up again. The Feds will need Quebecers with environmentalist records to show separation-curious voters that Canada isn’t actually a Petro-state during the inevitable independence referendum campaign.
The Liberals reached their peak in Québec this year, it can only really go down from here. Carney will have to make up the shortfall elsewhere in the country if he wants a majority.
