It's simply a theory that's been nagging at me for a while.
If you look at how power structures function, there's a pattern: the bigger the crisis, the easier it is to justify control. The Patriot Act after 9/11, states of emergency in various countries—you know the drill.
But at some point, you reach your limits. Economic crises? People get used to them. Terrorism? It doesn't have the same shock value as it used to. Pandemics? People become desensitized to them, too.
And that's where this crazy idea comes in: a staged alien invasion as the ultimate justification for global centralization.
Not because aliens have to exist, but because nothing unites (and simultaneously intimidates) people faster than a common external enemy.
Imagine all the things you could justify with this:
"Temporary" global military coordination
Mega-budgets that no one questions
Restrictions that would otherwise be politically impossible
A narrative rebranding: "We're protecting you from something you don't understand."
The point is: It would be the perfect shock strategy. A crisis that can't really be verified because 99% of people wouldn't have any way of finding out for themselves what's real and what isn't. A few videos in the sky, some military gunfire, a few controlled media reports—and the rest takes care of itself.

We would still have to go to work the next day, so a fake alien invasion wouldn’t be much of a game changer. We would get used to it.
However, if it was a REAL alien invasion, then nobody even knows what could happen. My top pick would be one of these:
– they would try to give us knowledge and free us from what’s been holding us back, such as exposing government lies, secrets and arresting everybody that deserves it (my favorite one, but less likely);
– kill us
– enslave us
– say hi and leave
– give us some quality-life-upgrades (such as cleaning all air and water pollution) and either leave or stay (which would cause conflict with the government).
