Idk how many on this sub have been following the IndiGo fiasco but basically last week they had massive issues cancelling hundreds of flights and leaving thousands of people stranded. Officially this was caused by a multitude of factors, the main one being new aviation regulations going into play changing the rules around rest periods and duties.
Now this isn’t official, just speculation but what circles around me are saying (and these are well connected circles) is that it was very much an intentional fuck-up by IndiGo in protest of the new regulations and to that end they were successful, which raises the question of how much power a firm should have in an industry if they can force a change to regulation by making plays like this. Though now the Indian govt has promised to clamp down on them, it’s to be seen how much that will really matter.
On the other hand, the new regulations were really really dumb. For instance they reduced the number of night landings from six to two. This would have been disastrous for an industry that’s not exactly coasting by with massive margins to begin with. So another question ought to be asked for why the government even made such strict regulations to begin with.
