  1. The argument by the three centrist/right of center Austrian parties is that this infringes on the girls right of expression and freedom. Critics say it’s anti Muslim. Honestly I can’t make up my mind about this. I get it but I also don’t know why it matters.

  2. Yeah freedom of expression is crucial even for children so this law fucking sucks. Yes it’s bad that some dynamics make girls feel forced to wear a hijab we should work on combatting those dynamics. But why the fuck should a country make it illegal for a daughter who wants to be like her mom and wear one. It’s Islamophobic and just fucking bad policy

I’m sympathetic, there is real hazard. That said, the specific argument of “we don’t want young girls expression restricted by authority, so we’re using our authority to restrict their expression” is an embarrassing rationale.

My local middle school’s informal policy of “if anyone on staff snitches to parents re:garb, that staff member is f’d” seems like a less hostile starting point.

Also, a side note, there appears to be a real disregard for the children who earnestly feel like they’re in a state of undress without a specific garment / how that effects comfort and truancy. I’m mostly aware of this in the context of bullying and discrimination, not formal policy, but it feels like a significant omission from the general conversation.

  4. The same law was previously repealed by the austrian court in 2020, since it target one gender and one religion.

This won’t last long. Vienna is set to be majority Muslim in just 20-40 years. Currently 42% of school children there identify as Muslim. This is simply the last desperate gasps of an Islamophobic culture.

  6. I get where they’re coming from but it’s unacceptable for the law to single out Muslims by name (it bans ‘traditional Muslim’ head coverings). There’s an argument for banning all religious symbols but it must be written and applied uniformly.
