How do we possibly deal with this? These figures are insane. Is the pro-immigration movement basically dead?

  1. I am from the DR but live in the US, albeit I have muslim grandparents who moved there in trujillo. I also have a lot of family in Europe.

I find it harder and harder to defend immigration. Not because of any changes in my values but because it just feels like a complete lost cause, and every time I bring it up I feel like I am just ‘tainting’ any other argument I possibly make. Almost all of my family in Europe, which previously were very pro immigration, have changed to being strongly anti-immigrant, despite being immigrants themselves. Same with many friends that I always thought were liberal.

Like, what is our threshold where continuing immigration is just straight up anti-democratic? At what point do we risk everything over this one specific issue? At what point are we also *endangering* existing immigrants in these nations by enabling the far right to gain not just power, but a mandate from the people to abuse that power?

Don’t worry, it’ll get even worse as climate change makes those areas even more inhospitable.

  3. I’ll be honest. In some ways, our job will be to keep the flame of liberalism alive during what is to be a dark time.
