Chips have been a major source of friction on trade and national defense between china and western countries. The US blocked exports of EUV machines as far back as 2019, and then Biden followed it up with restrictions on DUV machines and Americans and American companies working for Chinese semiconductor companies.
Now it appears as if China has partially reverse engineered an EUV machine. They have the laser working but it can’t make chips yet (which is like saying they have a plane but it won’t fly). It will still take a handful of years to get one working, but it appears as if they are closer than ever to making a breakthrough.
