Australia is moving toward expanding hate speech laws again, and it is being sold as public safety rather than what it actually is: expanded state power over speech.
Once the government gets to decide which speech is acceptable, the scope never shrinks. It widens. Journalists, political critics, religious speakers, and ordinary people end up self censoring long before any extremist does.
What stands out to me is that recent violent incidents already involved individuals known to authorities. That is an enforcement failure, not a speech failure. Restricting expression after the fact does nothing to stop actual violence.
There is a petition circulating calling on Parliament to halt the expansion and refocus on real public safety. Link below for anyone who wants to read it and decide for themselves.
Genuinely curious how others here see this tradeoff between liberty and security, especially watching Australia become a testing ground for speech regulation.
