Korea will introduce abortion pills for pregnancies of up to nine weeks by the first quarter of next year, with the drugs required to be prescribed and dispensed at hospitals or clinics during the first two years of their roll-out.
The authorization of such medication comes seven years after the Constitutional Court ruled the country’s ban on abortion unconstitutional.
“We will launch in phases medical abortion drugs for pregnancies of nine weeks or less,” Prime Minister Han Seong-sook said Wednesday at a national policy coordination meeting at the central government complex in Seoul.
“[Our goal] is to devise measures ensuring that women who need [an abortion] can receive care under a safe medical system instead of resorting to unproven methods,” she said.
The legalization of abortion pills came two months after President Lee Jae Myung told a Cabinet meeting on July 14 that it was “irresponsible” for the government to neglect the issue.
