I just watched the old 1990 video of the Soviet flag lowering over the Kremlin and the Russian Federation flag going up in its place.
The end of the Russian empire that pretended to be a “union of free socialist republics”……that all had to answer to Moscow and get its approval for every decision made.
I watched a doc on YouTube about Hungary and their President Miklos Nemeth, who basically told Gorbachev to kick rocks and took down Hungary’s border fence with Austria, leading to an open corridor for East Germans and Austrians to escape to the west and the eventual final collapse of the Soviet Union and its grip of communist control over Europe and parts of Asia.
Nemeth took a HUGE risk thumbing his nose against Moscow but won the bluff with Gorbachev and came out victorious.
