    SS:Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister and leader of the BNP has died after a prolonged illness at the age of 80.
    She became Bangladesh’s first PM in 1991 following the death of her husband. Her career was marked by spells in prison and a bitter rivalry with Sheikh Hasina. She was acquitted of corruption and allowed to travel to London for treatment only after Hasina’s removal last year.

    Her condition was extremely critical and she was on life support for the last few days. When news of her death broke, crowds gathered outside the hospital in Dhaka where she was admitted.

    Her first term was widely praised for efforts to improve women’s education and social development, with her government bringing back parliamentary democracy by amending the constitution with bipartisan support.

    Her third term from 2001 faced many allegations of corruption in the administration. Her son, Tarique will become the new leader of the BNP. Yunus offered his condolences while the Awami League of Hasina paid tribute to Zia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was deeply saddened by her death and paid tribute to her contribution towards the development of Bangladesh and its relations with India
