Saw a lot of blatantly racist comments in the H-1B thread (most got nuked fortunately). A lot more that are basically just “immigrants r stealin’ good ‘murican jobs” but couched in woke language and 2+ syllable words.
They only allow like 85,000 H-1B visas per year, you’d think the country would be swarming with Indian workers for all the racism you see directed at them.
Why not all H-1B workers??
Specifically regarding tech, I bet my salary would be lower if somehow we waved a magic wand and kicked out all H1Bs. It’d make more work be done elsewhere, often in locations where salaries are already lower.
See the many companies that are now hiring remotes in South America. I have coworkers that are very good, and making 1/3rd of the equivalent in America, in the very same team, working the same hours. So do we really want the H1Bs to also leave?
If having few competitors nearby raised salaries, the best place to work as a software developer n the US might be rural Iowa. Yet somehow I suspect local employers pay worse than Google does in the Bay Area, with all those immigrants everywhere.
If immigrants are stealing your job then you are not doing it well enough
