Social media users have found yet another goth girl to obsess over, but this one is just a little more problematic than the usual fare.
Her name is Amelia, and she's an antagonist in the educational, U.K. government-funded anti-extremist video game Pathways.
So, why have far-right communities on social media decided to embrace Amelia as a symbol of anti-immigration?
Pathways is an educational visual novel and learning experience created by the U.K. media company Shout Out UK, with funding from the U.K. government's Prevent program, run by the Home Office.
The game is meant to teach the youth about the dangers of radicalization and extremism in both real life and online. This is done by putting players in the role of a character named Charlie, who must navigate six different scenarios relating to extremism.
In the second scenario, the player is introduced to the character Amelia, a staunch anti-immigration protestor depicted as a goth girl with purple hair, a pink dress and a choker. While players are not meant to take Amelia's side, one side of the internet has recently decided to turn her into a controversial waifu.

Doesn’t she do a pose based on one scene where the characters >!drown!<?
To be fair, “it’s too late, I have already depicted you as the attractive goth girl!” might not have been the most calculated move by the government.

I can’t believe this is real
Edit: apparently fanart
lol all the goth people ive ever met have been the most socialist/communist/anarchist people ever
From what I’ve heard of this game, it’s either a job by a mole or the most out-of-touch person ever born in our timeline. Reportedly it has a lot of paralells to 1984, but the wrongthink here is anti-immigration.
At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if this game was a psyop created by Reform supporters who infiltrated the Labour Party lol. It’s perfectly awful and tone deaf.
This is their fault for not making the racist antagonist look like Vicky Pollard.
Whoever gave approval for this should be deported
We should create a neolib goth girl who supports immigration. 😤
Honestly not sure why the British government spends so much time and energy worrying about extremist terrorism on the right. In Britain, something like 98% of deaths in terror attacks since the millennium have been in Islamist attacks. And if we stretch it back further or apply it to Northern Ireland, these are not exactly right wing anti-immigration attacks, that’s sectarian Catholic/Protestant terrorism.
Twice as many people are referred to Prevent for radical right wing views as for Islamist ones.
Submission statement: They went after the gooners, *the gooners*.
Thanks, I hate this
At this point with how much I’ve seen. I’m almost convinced that the Dev team are all reform neets that fantasize about goth girls and nobody on labour actually bothered to play test this.
Like there’s a seen where you get a game over if you watch the news
A good message, somehow fucked up so hard at ended
I could do better job than Keir starmer and his cabinet honestly by working with Studio and peoples who were victim of extremism and you know, sent a literal informant to study mindset of those Shizo sociopaths
Your know what?? Fick it’s!!
Who want anti-extremist, gay, centrist neoliberal and Woke game with great story?
Never depict someone whose views you oppose as an attractive woman. What an organisation you are Prevent
Weebs need to be the ones getting deported. Not immigrants
Back in the day… We middle schoolers started wearing D.A.R.E t-shirts ironically.
These public morality education attempts tend to be extremely lame and disconnected. I would not be trying to “do policy” via this avenue.
I can’t tell what’s real anymore in this world. The existence of this game reads like a right-wing caricature of government funded political activism, but it’s actually real! I really wanna know the development history. Was it some university project with boomer profs in extremism studies?
Why can’t center-left parties just be normal?
Day by day, I am more and more confirmed that Starmer is just a Reform plant to make the UK government looks bad.
I played the game in question after hearing about it (it’s a browser game easy to look up if you want to try yourself) and it was no wonder to me that this happened. Literally the first question is about someone sending you a video and encouraging you to download and share it, your options are to tell a trusted adult, ask the person trying to get you to download more about it, or just to download it. Even if you choose the first option it concludes with the same message “downloading or streaming certain content can lead to a terrorist offense conviction” and I’m sure for many Americans like me that sentence requires doing a double take.
The third question presents you with a social media post that says “Muslim men are stealing the places of British war veterans in emergency accommodation” and that “the government is betraying white British people and we need to take back control of our country.” Your options are to ignore it, find out more online, or engage directly with the post as though it’s right. If you choose to find out more it just says you went to the account website, no finding scholarly articles or anything you just go straight to the poster, where you find “research paper, statistics, information about protests, and more regarding the ‘replacement’ of white people.” Then saying you fall into a right wing pipe encountering groups, some illegal, that support the message. Yup, doesn’t say they’re wrong, full of shit, no sources. It says they have data and shit backing them up and you were just supposed to ignore it in the first place.
Oh and at the end regardless of the choices you made it ends with your professor having a conversation with you and making a “prevent referral” that leads to you being placed in a workshop that helps you learn “how to engage positively with ideology and the difference between right and wrong in expressing political beliefs”
BTW the whole thing has you take the role of a university student so I have no clue who their target audience for this was without this kind of outcome.
Reminds me of the girl created for GamerGate.
Before reading this, I saw the picture and thought “yep, that’s an anime girl invented by the ideal online right ‘pick me.'” And then I saw that she was invented as a villain. This is beyond satire.

The United Kingdom is a meme nation
!ping UK&SHITPOSTERS
I played it and it was so unbelievably bad. If you pick the middle options of basically informing yourself before making a decision, the game scolds you for fucking wrongthink. This is abysmal and belongs in Pyongyang not the UK.
I’m getting strong “Vivian James” (from the Gamergate era) vibes from this
I hate that I learned about this from YouTube thumbnails first

In the year 2026 I can’t really care that much about racists creating a new le epic racist waifu they’ll forget about in a month. Seen this episode before.
I’d say this game sounds like an inside job undermining the establishment. Except, if you read what different companies promoting diversity in media (like Sweet Baby Inc.) in gaming preach, or how The Acolyte creator blamed the series bombing and being closed on “opportunists, fascists and racists”, or how, in late 2010s/early 2020s, some diversity training companies would unironically claim requiring punctuality is white supremacy, you can absolutely believe someone from their camp would genuinely produce a game like this and see no problems with it. They are exactly the type of people who would write the “stop noticing” story bit this game has, where a decision to research a far-right claim _leads you to reading research articles and looking at statistics, confirming that claim_, and that’s meant to be a bad choice.
These groups are not the allies of anyone willing to protect liberal democracy and to see sane moderate politicians in power, they are our greatest liability.
