The 33rd Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Lee Jin-kwan) on the 21st recognized the charges of Han Duck-soo, former Prime Minister, playing a key role in an insurrection as guilty, sentencing him to 23 years in prison and ordering his detention in court. The special counsel had previously demanded a 15-year prison sentence for the former prime minister, but the court significantly increased the sentence. Seoul Central District Court cited societal impact in exceeding prosecution’s 15-year demand.
2. How is this related to sub
(1) Rule of law: Korean court has shown no mercy to fascist insurrectionists.
3. My opinion
I’m surprised that Han Duck-Soo got this level of punishment. He was not exactly at the core conspirators of Dec 3rd insurrection, but he charged with negligence of duty to report on Yoon’s madness and take actions to stop him. Judges viewed his inaction as PM constituted “major contribution to insurrection”. The court took account “social impact” into account, accusing the insurrectionists of being worse than Chun Doo-hwan because they plotted to overthrow an established democracy. This indicates Yoon and his core cronies might get much harsher punishment than expected.
