Germany and four other EU states plan to establish “return hubs” in third countries to speed up deportations of rejected asylum seekers. Interior minister Alexander Dobrindt said a working group with Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands and Greece has begun preparations, with the European Commission closely involved. The centres would host migrants awaiting return after asylum claims are ruled inadmissible or definitively rejected, drawing on the EU’s new asylum system. Potential host countries have not been named.
