Submission statement: per four sources within the Venezuelan government, Vice-President Delcy Rodriguez and her brother Jorge, president of the National Assembly, assured the United States they would cooperate with the Trump administration were President Nicolas Maduro to be removed from power.
On January 3, 2026, US special forces launched an assault on Caracas and captured Maduro and his wife, killing an estimated 80 Venezuelan and Cuban security forces. Shortly after, Delcy Rodriguez was sworn in as Interim President and vowed to deepen cooperation with the US following a defiant speech against US imperialism.
The Guardian verified information from sources in the Venezuelan government saying that the Rodriguez siblings – as well as the powerful Diosdado Cabello, who leads Venezuelan security focres – had assured US and Qatari diplomats that they would welcome Nicolas Maduro's departure during the military buildup in the Caribbean, accrediting the thesis of an internal coup d'etat within the Chavist regime to get rid of Maduro by giving the US a symbolic victory in exchange for the entrenching of Chavist elites in Venezuela.

So could you say it was a coup?
Did Maduro do the right thing by not respecting the election results?
Like think about it, Venesuela has been a one party state under Chavismo. If he had just transitioned to Democracy it would’ve been reckless as it didn’t work within Venezuela’s institutional framework. By not respecting it he kept the country stable, peacful, and prosperous.
Like think about it, we all acknowledge today Trump did the right thing by not attempting more regime change and keeping Chavistas in power. More would’ve been destabilizing.
Edit: /s needed apparently
The Chavistas played Trump like a fiddle, traded in a figurehead for another few years in charge
