As a NYC resident and reading Gillibrand’s newsletter where nr 3 highlight was that she visited some foundation for MLK day.
Not that she is not for the moment, but I realized that she reads like a Greenwich hedge fund yoga wife doing the charity circuit. We need passion and activism, not whatever the fuck this was I just read.

Je suis Catfortune.
Someone I chat with regularly on Discord is one of those “both sides suck” people. He used to DM me a lot about how all the stuff Dems are doing is bad, adding a “oh of course republicans suck too” in there usually. A lot of it was “gun grabber” stuff, he’s often worried someone is going to take his guns. The conversations were pretty chill, I tried to be a good listener and find common ground. He’s been silent since Trump took office.
I messaged him in anger about ICE killing Pretti today, and he immediately deflects to stuff about fraud by Somali immigrants, and how the mayor of Seattle (where I live) will do nothing about it. I told him I wasn’t ready to change topics, I was really mad about Pretti at the moment. He then changes the topic to Renee Good, and how the officer was within his rights to shoot her because she was about to run him over. It felt weird and defensive from him.
We had some tense back and forth, and he finally said “I thought we didn’t talk about politics.” I was a little flabbergasted. When he talks about his dissatisfaction with dems, that’s not politics, but when I talk about ICE killing a man, that’s politics?
The reason we “didn’t talk politics” lately is because he didn’t initiate those discussions anymore, not since Trump got elected. I do that once and apparently I’m starting shit now.
Posting again:
The devil appears. He says: you have two options, they cannot be circumvented.
One: Trump must continue serving for the remaining three years but after you can have your candidate of choice after another Jan 6 type election fiasco.
Or Two: Trump steps down tomorrow suddenly and quits the life of politics due to xyz reasons, his followers splinter but many of them follow Vance instead. Vance takes the reins and will win re-election. After Vance’s second term, you may pick your candidate of choice to win.
Which do you choose?

Can you imagine if ICE just came up and did that to you for simply recording with your phone?

BASED
>The Fedayeen Saddam was not part of Iraq’s regular armed forces but rather operated as a paramilitary unit of irregular forces. As a result of this, the Fedayeen reported directly to the Presidental Palace, rather than through the military chain of command. Whilst paramilitary, the Fedayeen were not an elite military force, often receiving just basic training and operating without heavy weapons.
>Much like other paramilitaries, the Fedayeen was volunteer based and the units were never given an official salary. As a result, most of the members resorted to extortion and theft of property from the general population, even though the members had access to sanction-evading trade and high quality services (i.e. new cars, hospitals reserved for officials, expensive electronics) and a general standard of living considerably higher than that of the average Iraqi of the time. However, they were ordered not to threaten or harm any government officials.
>The Fedayeen were among the most loyal organizations to the regime of Saddam Hussein and were a politically reliable force against domestic opponents. The militia is directly responsible for some of the regime’s most brutal acts. The Fedayeen caught the attention of the international community in 2000 when it was reported that 30 prostitutes were beheaded in Baghdad, Basra and other major cities. Their heads were left on the front doorsteps of the prostitutes’ homes as a “deterrent”. Another report revealed that the militia executed eight prisoners on charges of defacing several murals depicting Saddam Hussein. Another example of Fedayeen’s brutality was in the spring of 2000, when it was reported that the militia cut out the tongues of four men accused of slandering Saddam Hussein with a pair of shears in Nasiriyah. Then all four were beheaded with a sword.
swap “Fedayeen” for “ICE” and “Saddam” for “Trump” and there’s a non-zero chance that’s where we are in 2027.
Bush-era conspiracy theorists were right about basically everything, but now they’re siding with the government
Listening to Alex Karp talk about how he still considers himself a radical progressive because he grew up in a Jewish left wing household where it was said that conservatives would bankrupt labor in this country through immigration is…. Well
Honestly, I can see how he doesn’t see any contradiction. This was the Cesar Chavez and Bernie Sanders position. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen stranger bed fellows in my lifetime politically.
Because again, the most famous Latino labor rights leader in California who we celebrate was very anti immigration.
You may disagree with Karp’s position(I do) but he’s not wrong about that being the traditional pro labor position
There’s also the fact that the biggest proponents of immigration in late 20th century American politics are the definitive neo liberal icons like Reagan and Clinton.

> [Thus, it appears that [ICE] arrested a chronically ill, 70-year-old woman, who came to this country to avoid religious persecution and applied for asylum, who has lived here peacefully for 26 years and complied with all check-in requirements and other conditions of release, who has no known criminal record and poses no threat to anyone, without notice or the process required by their own regulations and without any plan for removing her from this country, then kept her in detention for months without sufficient medical care—and they do not have any argument to offer to even try to justify these actions.](https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cacd.1000677/gov.uscourts.cacd.1000677.8.0.pdf)
We’re now judging ICE by the standards of murder but even their regular activities are beyond heinous

What sequence of events would have to happen for the US to switch to a parliamentary system?
Fwiw, I *do* think this latest killing may have broken through a bit to the everyday person. Anecdotally, I’ve seen normies I follow pissed about it
We’re not against DTs. We’re not against DTers. But we are against those libs^libs^libs^libs
For everyone doomscrolling, it takes 30 minutes of research to move money away from MAGA, and it’ll actually make a difference. Dollars spent at Republican companies are dollars funneled to more of this. Money given to states like Ohio or Louisiana is money spent sending troops to kidnap children and kill people.
If you consistently do business with a company, you have power. You can use sites like [opensecrets.org](https://www.opensecrets.org) to see what a company funds and where your money is really going.
Trade with Schwab? Move elsewhere like Fidelity. Get booze from wannabe Confederate states and all else is equal? Be adventurous, and try something new. New Balance can be replaced with Brooks. It’s not hard to find alternatives for Goya, Roark (which owns Subway, Jimmy John’s, Arby’s), and Koch (which owns Brawny, Angel Soft, Dixie). You don’t have to spend more or less, just differently.
If you have disposable income, consider the tax benefits of donating to the nonprofits successfully fighting the regime like the [National Immigration Law Center](https://www.nilc.org/litigation/), [NAACP Legal Defense Fund](https://www.naacpldf.org/ldf-cases-against-trump-tracker/), or [Democracy Forward](https://democracyforward.org/work/legal/). And if you invest, consider DEMZ or an ESG fund
Nexstar and Sinclair got pummeled, and they reinstated Jimmy Kimmel. Real, individual people did that. There’s no reason WWE or Uline can’t be next.
Completely avoiding companies that at least partially lean Republican is hard. But there’s a big difference between massive GOP donors (Chevron/Conoco) vs neutral or even Democrat-leaning ones (Circle K/Costco). Good is not the enemy of perfect
Another similarity with the first murder by ICE is that they AGAIN initially denied a doctor access to the victim

>7. At first, the ICE agents wouldn’t let me through. They repeatedly asked me for my physician’s license, which I obviously didn’t have. But none of the ICE agents who were near the victim were performing CPR, and I could tell that the victim was in critical condition. I insisted that the agents let me assess him. Normally, I would not have been so persistent, but as a physician, I felt a professional and moral obligation to help this man, especially since none of the agents were helping him.
>8. Finally, one agent agreed to let me assess the victim. He patted me down to “make sure I didn’t have a weapon” and then let me approach the victim.
>9. As I approached, I saw that the victim was lying on his side and was surrounded by several ICE agents. I was confused as to why the victim was on his side, because that is not standard practice when a victim has been shot. Checking for a pulse and administering CPR is standard practice. Instead of doing either of those things, the ICE agents appeared to be counting his bullet wounds.
You don’t hate these people enough
