Nordic countries should consider a joint nuclear deterrent to hedge against Russia’s coercive nuclear strategy in Ukraine, argues Johannes Kibsgaard from the Norwegian military. NATO’s extended deterrence is increasingly unreliable, leaving Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden vulnerable. A shared program would focus on second-strike capability, rotational command, and strict civilian oversight to ensure credibility and restraint. It would complement NATO rather than replace it, relying on strong conventional forces to reinforce deterrence. Such an initiative would enhance regional security and strategic independence while maintaining alliance cohesion.

  2. No. Nuclear annihilation is bad, actually. Increasing the chances of nuclear war is bad, too.

I know you’re not technically Nordic but you often have the strongest thoughts on this

  4. Well, if nuclear powers can’t stop forcing themselves at non-nuclear ones then yeah, the rest of us can either do something about it or stand in the queue to be gobbled up.
