tl;dr refined gasoline is scarce in California. west coast refineries has closed. there’s no pipeline that can bring gasoline from the midwest to California. gasoline is transported on tankers that cross the Panama canal. only a handful of US-flagged tankers are allowed to ship between US ports.

I live in California and I spent some time working in one of the refineries that is closing, it’s been around for over 100 years, and it’s probably why we don’t have $6 /gallon gasoline, yet.

I haven’t noticed significant price increases yet, but I imagine there will be a gradual price creep in gas and diesel prices. There’s a chance we can elect a Republican Governor when Newscum terms out, hopefully he or she is pro oil and can reverse these policies driving refining out of the state.

  3. It was $5.39/gallon for regular in the San Francisco Bay Area yesterday. The crazy thing is that we are still on our cheaper “winter mix.”
