In Foreign Policy, columnist Emma Ashford argues that President Donald Trump has betrayed his “America First” base by launching a major military campaign against Iran. She says voters backed Trump as a restraint-minded candidate opposed to Middle East wars, and polling shows little public or Republican appetite for regime change in Tehran. The strikes, she contends, reflect pressure from party hawks and the vagueness of “America First,” risking another prolonged regional entanglement and further slippage in Trump’s foreign-policy approval ratings.
