China said it ended poverty. Did it?

  1. Just like when India claimed to have lifted 500 million people out of poverty, you need to further examine what that statement means. Both China and India have lifted hundreds of millions of people out of extreme poverty, not poverty as a whole. You can still witness widespread poverty if you go to rural areas in those countries.

Preemptively: No. A good article that goes over China’s attempts to cut poverty rates and it’s missteps in the process. While liberalisation has done a good job of bringing millions of Chinese out of poverty, the government clings to the World Bank standard of $3 a day despite now being a much wealthier middle income nation. As the adage goes, when a measure becomes a target it ceases to be a good measure.

In addition some of the measures China has used to combat poverty have had mixed results. Heavy investment into underutilised infrastructure have led to serious issues of local government debt that have only been exacerbated by shocks such as the pandemic.

honestly the definition of poverty they use is so low it’s kinda meaningless.. like congrats on getting people above $2 a day i guess but that’s not exactly thriving.
