Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Katherina Reiche, is being advised to reconsider the country’s 2017 ban on fracking in response to energy supply pressures linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran. A report by four economic advisers recommends exploring domestic gas extraction to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and stabilize energy prices.

The advisers argue that fracking risks can be significantly mitigated. Estimates suggest Germany’s soil holds between 320 billion and 2,030 billion cubic metres of natural gas. Last year, Germany imported approximately 11 bcm of liquefied natural gas from the United States. Fracking involves injecting high-pressure fluids into underground rock formations to release natural gas or oil, a process previously banned in Germany due to environmental concerns.

It wouldn’t do much because of the way mineral rights work in Europe. Mineral rights are separate from land ownership, the state owns the minerals. This means why would any landowner go looking for oil, they don’t own it anyways, so you’re a lot less likely to find any.

  3. Anything but nuclear power for the germans I guess.

Relying on cheap Russian gas to the detriment of Eastern European security: GOOD

Strip mining forests to burn coal: GOOD

Fracking for gas ruining water supplies: GOOD

Clean nuclear energy with massive baseload abilities: BAD <8(
