Due to groundwater withdrawal, Teheran is one of the fastest sinking cities on the planet, with some neighborhoods sinking over 25 cm per year

Submission statement: Tehran is ground zero for being the first major city in modern times that could be abandoned due to water shortage and the secondary effects that come from it

it lies at a high altitude, making even water pumping through desalination costly and expensive

and at this point, even if water withdrawal balance would suddenly get to zero, the ground and everything above it will keep sinking for decades

just try to imagine what an effect this has on gas, water, road, and electric power infrastructure, nevermind on residential buildings which often tilt or crack

    25cm is like 10 inches.

If true that’s pretty insane. It’s a shame the lake just above them isn’t fresh water.
