A few things I think could be intersecting
1) the United States has a specific relationship to religion which imo helps drive these attitudes especially as more people stop caring about religion and those who remain religious double down.
2) certain cultural attitudes in the US leads to the establishment of mini fiefs where some people really don’t encounter the other as much as they probably should
3) there is an exceptionally really bad and awful faction in American politics right now.
4) lack of housing

Most Americans voted for what is going on so I feel comfortable in considering the majority of Americans bad people
