Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi has left the country after spending two months in hiding following disputed elections in January 2026. Kyagulanyi, who finished second to longtime president Yoweri Museveni, rejected the results, alleging widespread fraud and repression against his supporters. He went into hiding after security forces raided his home, an incident he said involved violence against his family. During this period, Uganda’s military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Museveni’s son, posted a message saying he wanted Kyagulanyi “dead or alive” which intensified fears for his safety. Kyagulanyi says he will briefly work with international allies before returning to Uganda.
