Two people attempted to detonate an explosive device at the Bank of America building in Paris last night. French Interior Minister Nuñez described it as a “violent act of a terrorist nature.” One of the two suspects has been arrested.
The pair were spotted by police officers at the entrance of the bank. One of them was about to detonate a homemade explosive device when he was arrested. He is a 17-year-old boy. He claims that he was recruited via Snapchat to carry out the attack. He was to receive 600 euros for this. The police are still searching for the other suspect.
In an interview with the French channel BFMTV, Minister Nuñez said that the attack was linked to the war in the Middle East. The war began a month ago when Israel and America carried out joint missile attacks on Iran. “This is reminiscent of similar actions that took place in other countries such as the United Kingdom, Norway, Belgium, and the Netherlands. France is not the only European country that is a target.”
The recent attacks on Jewish institutions in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, as well as antisemitic attacks in Belgium and the UK, have been claimed by a terrorist group named Ashab al-Yamin . Little remains unclear about the group, but according to a recent report, multiple signals point towards Iran.
The type of explosive material the perpetrators were using is still under investigation. The investigation has been handed over to the counter-terrorism department of the Paris police and the National Counter-Terrorism Office.
Le Journal du Dimanche speaks of an “amateurish attempt with potentially serious consequences”. According to the newspaper, the police were on patrol in the street where the bank is located, not far from the famous shopping street Champs-Élysées, at the time of the attack.
Since the war in the Middle East began a month ago, the French authorities have been extra vigilant regarding American and Israeli or Jewish institutions. “Vigilance remains higher than ever,” said Nuñez.
