Relevant to this sub because global warming is inextricably linked to economic and energy policies, and the shifts caused by the AMOC collapsing would have massive geopolitical implications as well as likely create a massive refugee wave.
I'm also curious to hear more discussions on this sub about sustainability and how to make it happen through a liberal framework, as while degrowth is a political non-starter and the approaches I've seen to it seem uncomfortably paternalistic, our current energy usage and resource consumption habits need to shift somehow if we want to avoid ecosystem collapses and everything that comes with them.

Wouldn’t the AMOC collapsing freeze Ireland? So the refugees here wouldn’t be Africans, if anyone thought so, but the red-haired Irish.
Jesus Christ. One of the most terrifying climate findings I’ve ever seen.
> They found an estimated slowdown of 42% to 58% in 2100, a level almost certain to end in collapse.
A 40-60% chance large swathes of Europe become inhospitable by 2100 huh. Not good.
Edit: I misread, that’s not a probability, that’s the estimated slowdown. So even worse then
i saw a video on this 4 years ago – theres surely knockon effects after the amoc fails – like what if this causes a southward shift of tropical rainfall belts, potentially causing the failure of monsoons in Africa and Asia – that would properly fuck up the earth tbh
Ahahahahaha. Well bring it on. None of this is a surprise but the speed.
I was long opposed to aerosol dimming of the sky, believing that the unknowns far outweighed the benefits, and had faith in climate action. But here we are decades into people sounding the alarm, and the best we can muster is an administration that wants to *accelerate* emissions because the alternative is too effiminate. After all that, I’m starting to come around to the idea that aerosol dimming may be the only way to keep the decarbonization runway feasibly long enough to not create civilizational catastrophe. It should be a last resort, but hey, we’re at last resort time.
However, who knows if putting an immediate brake on warming would be enough to save Europe. The AMOC may very well be past saving.
So uh…. anything we can do about this or are we fucked?
