In recent years, the Australian immigration system has been much more tolerant of temporary immigrants than of permanent ones, causing unpredictability in many industries when hiring staff. To make matters worse, the opposition party is more anti-immigrant than the current Australian government, as it emphasises that it would invest more in the local population. Those developments, including the rise of a far-right party, will have a severe impact on Australia’s democracy and economy.
My personal view on this:
As an immigrant here, I already saw how this unpredictability works out in the local job market, where most employers would reject immigrants without permanent residency on the spot, as they are afraid that they will have to leave Australia when their visa expires in months, which throws immigrants, who are even in professions that are in great shortage, into a deeper limbo, and have to result to undocumented works for a living.
Also, the current situation of the Australian immigrant problem is very different from other counterparts, as Australia has very few illegal immigrants due to its geographic conditions and extremely harsh punishment. Still, it looks like the current Labour government lacks any ambition to support immigration, even in critical areas that are in great need of workers, and instead panders to populists for votes by promising to further limit permanent residency.
And make it worse, the only pro immigration party here is the fucking Greens, which is a NIMBY leftism populist party…

I have tried to get a visa but it’s pretty difficult if you’re in the wrong occupation.
Sucks if it’s only getting worse
