Zelenskyy arrives in Armenia | Mark Carney, Macron, Starmer, and other European leaders have arrived in Armenia for the European Political Community Summit
Armenia is hosting the European Political Community Summit in Yerevan, one day before the first every bilateral EU-Armenia Summit which will also be held in Yerevan. The gathering of European heads of state is the latest in a series of events marking Armenia’s rapprochement with Europe and reorientation away from Russia. This is in contrast to neighboring Georgia, long seen as an aspiring EU candidate that in recent years has experienced democratic backsliding and moved towards Russia, at the cost of its own EU ambitions. Zelenskyy’s presence in particular has drawn criticism from the Russian Foreign Ministry which has already suspended imports of Armenia’s Jermuk water. The dual summits and the boost in EU political, institutional, and monetary support for Armenia will likely boost support for PM Pashinyan’s party heading into parliamentary elections on June 7. The ruling Civil Contract party is expected is opposed by several Pro-Russian parties.
Also noteworthy is the first time that a non-European country, Canada, has been invited to attend signaling a major shift in the country’s importance to the European security architecture in the wake of Donald Trumps’ military threats to Greenland and ongoing war in Iran.
